Advisory Committees Donna Berger 21 Feb 1996 17:20 EST

We have two new faculty who are reapplying for a NSF
Curriculum Development and they are in the process of
setting up an advisory committee for their grant
application. I am rather new to grants administration and
was not sure how to advise our faculty with respect to setting
up the committee and honoraria for committee members.

Does anyone have any advice on how these committees should be
set up and the typical honorarium for members? This
is an interdisciplinary project between our math and
writing faculty. They are revising their very first grant proposal
and are responding to the reviewers' comments to get
people who will serve on an advisory committee. The grant period
is two years and it is expected that the committee will meet three times
-- four days for the initial visit to assess the project and provide
guidance -- two days for the second visit to assess the progress and
critique the materials that have been developed -- and two days for
a summative assessment and to make recommendations for future
initiatives.

Should we offer a set (and consistent) amount for each member or
ask them what they would like to receive in the way of payment?

Is it appropriate to charge these stipends to a grant budget
that was already too high or should the institution pick up the cost?

Any advice would be much appreciated. In case this is
not a subject of interest to the general list, please send responses
to me directly.
