INDIRECT COSTS DISTRIBUTED TO SPONSORED PROGRAM OFFICES LARRY WAXLER 30 Jan 1996 10:43 EST

Several days ago I reviewed a listing of indirect cost distritutions to
various campus departments at about three dozen different colleges and
universities. Here at the University of Southern Maine, our Office of
Sponsored Programs has not shared in the distribution of IC, rather we
have a base budget that in theory covers our needs. As we have
experienced some tremendous growth over the past few years, growing
$2-$3M per year, our base budget no longer covers the real cost of the
office. The administration is thinking of including us in the IC
distribution as a means for funding this growth. As the total grant
activity increases, so does IC recovery and the pressure on this office.

For those campus sponsored programs offices that do share in IC:

What is the relationship between your department budget and the total IC
generated?

Is your budget based on a fixed base, some portion of IC recovery, or a
combination of the two?

How are or would the growing needs of your office be met?

Thanks for any comments that you might have.
