Some other commands will also be found towards the end of this text. I have a more complete list of commands available, and would be willing to post them after I get them into electronic format. Hope this helps: Charlie. LISTSERVS - Internet discussion groups - how to find and use one Updated 1/5/96 The Internet supports a large number of discussion groups (generically called listservs) on a wide variety of topics. Listservs are a wonderful way to find help and expertise in your field, because they typically follow a question/answer/discussion format. A message sent to the list is received by all its subscribers. You can perform a text search for lists of interest to you. Send an e-mail message with the syntax: list global /text (where "text" is the text string you want to look for) to: xxxxxx@listserv.net. (In the unlikely event you get an error message instead of the desired result, probably you are on a Bitnet-only network not configured to recognize Internet addresses: try sending to xxxxxx@listserv (omit ".net.); or contact your system administrator.) Below is a specimen listserv found with such a search having "research" as the search string. When you have found one meeting your needs, subscribe to it (warning, some lists are very active so don't subscribe to a whole lot in advance - you may get swamped in mail). *********************************************************************** * To subscribe, send mail to xxxxxx@LISTSERV.NET with the following * * command in the text (not the subject) of your message: * * * * SUBSCRIBE listname * * * * Replace 'listname' with the name in the first column of the table. * *********************************************************************** *********************************************************************** * Other requests to the listserver, such as "unsubscribe" or "signoff"* * should be sent to the SPECIFIC listserver serving the list you * * subscribed to. To do this, substitute "list name" in the addresss * * with "LISTSERV". In the case of the example below that would * * be xxxxxx@UABDPO.DPO.UAB.EDU * *********************************************************************** Network-wide ID Full address and list description (the full list (List Name) is at the end of --------------- --------------------------------- this document) AACRL xxxxxx@UABDPO.DPO.UAB.EDU Alabama Association of College and Research Libraries *********************************************************************** * Make sure you understand the difference between the "list" (the * * mailing list of subscribers), which has a different address from * * the listserver (the computer that services the list, to which you * * send subscribe and other commands). * * * * Messages to the list must always be sent to the list address as * * shown below. In responding to a message received from the list, * * never use your mailer's Reply function, which will send your * * message to the listserver instead of the list. This error may get * * you bounced off the list! * *********************************************************************** *********************************************************************** * Further instructions will be found at the end of this listing, * * including how to get a full set of listserv commands. * *********************************************************************** Unsubscribe by mailing to the listserver the following message: signoff listname To get more information on the various commands and options available with a listserv, send the message 'info refcard' to the listserver. You will discover how to customize the system for your use, how to review archived messages, etc. Make sure you send commands to the listserver hosting your list, because different listserv software behaves differently. Some of the more useful commands (sent in a message to the listserver) are: info genintro sends you a general introduction index listservname sends a list of archived files (usually archived on a monthly basis) get listservname filetype retreives specified files info database sends info on the listserv database functions \data\docs\listserv.txt LSU Office of Sponsored Research ********************************************************************* * Charles E.
