Post-Doc Salaries Margo Lucareli 02 Oct 1995 11:16 EST

We are requesting information from other institutions regarding post-doc
salary levels. To give you the background for this inquiry: The Whitehead
Institute for Biomedical Research is a private non-profit institution doing
basic research (i.e., no clinical research). Therefore, most of our
post-doc's are Ph.D.'s. We have do some M.D.'s and M.D./Ph.D.'s. We are
trying to establish consistent and fair salary scales to be used when
paying postdoc's and when we are asked by a funding agency, such as HHMI,
to recommend a salary that is consistent with our internal scales
(difficult when HHMI scales are considerably higher).

We are interested in the experience of other institutions and thus, ask the
following questions:

1a. How do you determine the postdoc salaries when using institutional
funds? (do you use the NIH scale or modification thereof)

b. Do you have a minimum/and or a maximum?

c. Do you pay more to someone with an MD or for someone with both a PhD and
an MD? How do you determine how much more?

d. What criteria do you use to initially place someone on the scale and
what increments do you use for experience?

2a. Do you subsidize postdoc salaries paid by an outside agency and, if so,
how do you determine the amount of subsidy?

3a. Do you consider postdocs whose money comes from a third party but is
disbursed by the Institution to be employees or non-employees?

b. If employees, do they receive the same benefits as all other employees,
a lesser benefits package, or no benefits?

Please send responses directly to me. I will summarize the results for the
respondees or post them to the list if you think this will be of interest
to everyone. Please include your institution's name, location, and salary
scales for the group under discussion. Also, a name and phone number for
further questions would be helpful.

THANKS in advance for your help and cooperation.
