Department of Computer Science
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
This position offers an exciting opportunity for a dynamic person having
good interpersonal and business skills who wishes to work in a top five
department at the forefront of computing research. Must possess both
ability and experience in planning, developing, and managing the human,
financial, and physical resources in a large, highly computer- and
research-oriented, academic department. Specifically, there are four
primary aspects to the position: (1) Management of personnel matters for
all support staff and interaction with the head and associate head in
managing some aspects of academic and professional staff. (2) Developing
and planning future (n-year) departmental budgets; managing, with the
assistance of a full-time accountant and a full-time business manager, all
current budgets and accounts; and to develop new and more efficient means of
carrying out the business operations of the department. (3) Creating
budgets for and managing the contractual aspects of research contracts and
grants from external entities. (4) Working with the associate head in
planning, use, and management of the departmental physical space and
facilities.
A bachelor's degree in an appropriate, business-related field, five years
of relevant experience in managing personnel and budgets, and a good
working knowledge of, and ability to use, personal computers and commonly
used business software (e.g., spread sheets, data bases, and word
processors) are required. In addition, an excellent knowledge of the
University and campus business and administrative structures, business
systems, operating procedures, and planning processes are required. An
advanced degree in a business-oriented field is desirable but not required.
The department is large, with 37 faculty, 30 support staff, 10 academic
professionals, 800 undergraduate students, and 350 graduate students. It
is very computer-oriented, with over 100 instructional, 30 support, and 500
research computers supporting faculty and graduate student research, staff,
and undergraduate computing in a continually evolving environment. The
chosen candidate will work and interact with a large number of research
faculty, students, staff, professionals, and people outside of the
university.
The position is a 12-month, 100% time academic/professional appointment
with regular University benefits. The salary is open and will be
competitive and appropriate to the qualifications and experience presented.
The position is available immediately with a preferred starting date of

received by September 15, 1995. Interviewing may take place during the
