Incentives for Faculty Obtaining Sponsored Awards Tina Ault Hyken 09 Aug 1995 10:02 EST

West Virginia University is currently brainstorming possible
incentives for faculty who obtain sponsored awards. I'd like
information regarding tangible incentive programs which exist
currently in regards to the issues below. Please consider
tangible to refer to a direct benefit to the faculty member in
the form of additional compensation (one time bonus payments,
merit raises, etc.) and/or additional resources (graduate
assistants, funding for professional conferences, additional
equipment, etc.)

1) Does your institution have an incentive program which pays
incentives in the form of salaries directly to the faculty member?
If so, how are such payments justified in relation to A-21? I have
some concern that while not specifically disallowed, bonus payments
are not in the spirit of the regs. If someone can site where such
payments are specifically disallowed-I'd love to know!
2) Does your institution have an incentive program which provides
other non-salary incentives? If so what kinds?
3)In either case, what are the qualifying factors to
receive such incentives?
Additionally, has anyone considered such a program and then
rejected the idea? If so, on what basis?
Any and all information/opinions/two cents are appreciated.
