I would like to receive either a formal organizational structure,
or a brief note describing such, of the research administration
offices in large university's with one or more schools of that
university receiving the majority of the funding.  I am not looking
for numbers of individuals, but just the offices which exist and
their reporting lines.

Here is where I am coming from:  I am at Washington University
in St. Louis.  The University receives $200+ million of sponsored
funding and the Medical School receives 75%+ of that.  Here
are the offices we have which I view as research administration:

Research Office  (University office-2 sites)  (mostly pre\some post)
Sponsored Projects Accounting  (University)   (mostly post\some pre)
Gifts, Grants & Contract  (Medical Office)    (mostly pre\some post)
Human Studies-IRB  (Medical School)
Human Studies-IRB  (Schools other than Medicine)
Animal Studies     (Medical)

Tech Transfer and Clinical Trials/Drug Studies are yet handled by
two other offices.  And guess what?  None of the offices report
to the same individual.  We are all actually quite productive
but are we providing the most efficient service to our customers?

SOME of the research administration offices at Washington
University recently went through a reengineering excercise called
Process Mapping.  One area of focus was the idea of restructuring
all of the research administration offices.  The idea would be to
develop a "one stop shopping" set up.  We are not yet sure what the
best organizational structure is.  This topic will be explored at an
interactive session at the fall SRA meeting in Chicago.
