Faculty Credit on Multidisciplinary Proposals Peter Johnson 26 Jun 1995 19:58 EST

When offers are received, we require the principal investigator to sign an
internal form as part of the acceptance procedure. Where there is more than
one investigator and the proposal is multidisciplinary,
the investigators decide between themselves on the relative proportions of
collaboration and enter those proportions on the form. The form is endorsed
by their heads of department and entered into our grants database. Success
in winning grants is also a factor in the distribution of the university
budget to faculties, so the proportions are also taken into account for
those purposes. Interestingly, the proportions are not always relative to
the number of investigators. For example, two investigators in different
disciplines might decide that for a particular project, the proportions are
80/20, not 50/50. It is possible to produce printouts showing for each
internal multidisciplinary grant the relative proportion for each
department and faculty.
