Request for Data Kevin Crosby 21 Jun 1995 09:29 EST
Our office here at DePaul is trying to get some data about the size & structure of offices of sponsored programs at comprable universities. I'm new to the list, so if this has been discussed at length recently let me= know. Here's a little background about our office, and the kind of info we're looking for: As part of the university's strategic planning for future growth and institutional changes, the Office of Sponsored Programs and Researchis being asked to anticipate its role and the resources required over the next several years. To place us within the larger research administrative universe, we seek some comparable data. DePaul University is a private, Catholic university, with no medical school, with a strong reputation for the quality of teaching. While many of the 500 full-time faculty do research, DePaul is not a major research institution. The Office of S=7Fponsored Programs and= Research performs full pre- and post-award services. Our annual grant applications have grown from 100 in 1990 to 152 in 1994; the number of awards received has grown from 60 to 85 during the same period. This continuing growth has placed a strain on the staff of the office; we currently have 3 full-time professional staff, 2 full-time equivalentsupport sta=7Fff, and a 1/2-time student assistant. To make a case for additional support, we are asked to provide comparable staffing/grant=7F activity data from other institutions. An additional factor: as growth continues, there is an tendency toward decentralization of the grants functions, with separate schools and departments beginning to establish grant representatives and budget managers. If your office is comparable we would appreciate the following information (all or partial): 1. Private University (yes, no) 2. Medical school (yes, no) 3. Performs pre- and post-award services (yes, no) 4. Full-time faculty: number 5. Annual grant applications: number 6. Annual grant awards: number 7. Total amounts requested: $ amounts 8. Total amounts received: $ amounts 9. Size of staff: full-time pre-award ( ), post-award ( ); part-time pre-award ( ), post-award ( ); student assistance ( ); other ( ). 10. Centralized external grants functions (yes, no) 11. Are you experiencing a decentralizing trend? Thanks much. I'll post the results to the list in a week or so.
