At the University of Connecticut, we are currently working with the
following difinitions.
The University may occasionally undertake projects which are
considered service rather than research, in order to foster economic
growth and development, if it is consistent with its mission and the
University's academic integrity. The results of such projects are
generally predictable and predefined and may be delivered to the
company in confidence. (Not all projects in the service-for-a-fee
category involve proprietary data.)
On the other hand, any projects which may generate new knowledge
and where the results are unpredictable, such as inventions, are
considered bona fide research projects and the results belong to the
University.
