Consent forms for human research

I'm seeing consent forms for human research that mix their pronouns and are
unclear about who is agreeing to what. Writing them in the first person seems
most clear and simple, but OPRR points out that "I understand.." phrasing
could be perceived as coersive (cf Tips for Single Project Assurance) or
condescending. I'd be interested in a discussion of the trade-offs involved.
Does your institution have a preference or requirement about this? If you
were writing a "best practices" manual on consent forms, how would you deal
with this (don't be shy--other aspects, as well!). Thoughts and references to
literature on it are all welcome.
