An issue recently arose at our last Human Subject Committee meeting
regarding the practice of giving students "extra credit" for
participating in a research study. Some members felt this was
common practice while others had some concerns about whether or not
it might be somewhat "coercive". They were also concerned about
"equivalent" assignments for those students who chose not to
participate in the research and more importantly, is it fair?
My questions are:
1. Does your institution have a policy regarding
the practice of "extra credit" in exchange
for project participation?
2. If so, is it a departmental or IRB policy?
Any other thoughts you may have would be helpful and appreciated.
