Our IRB (UW-River Falls, 5,000 students, approximately 30 protocols per
year, most exempt) consists of six members plus me as staff.  Two
members come from psychology, one from sociology, one from
counseling and school psych, one from health/PE, and one from the
community--we drafted a local pastor.  Members serve three year terms,
staggered, so it's never an entirely new group.  I take care of the
paperwork and serve as institutional officer--consequently I can approve
exempted protocols.  Expedited protocols are reviewed by me and the
chair.  So far it seems to work reasonably well.  Last year we rewrote
our manual, retaining most of our old procedures.  The new version is
much more readable, that's helped a lot.
