Technology Manager The University of Saskatchewan seeks a dynamic individual to coordinate the patenting, marketing, licensing and commercialization of inventions developed from University research. The Environment: The University of Saskatchewan attracts $50 million of research funding annually to support 1000 faculty and 2500 graduate students in 13 colleges. The University has strong interests in engineering, natural sciences, agricultural sciences, and health sciences. The University has excellent relations with the government and industry, especially in agricultural biotechnology where Saskatchewan is considered to be a world-leader, environmental sciences and health sciences, and tenants of Innovation Place, an associated research park, who have national and international research and development interests. The University encourages transfer of technology to the private sector and actively fosters the development of "spin-off" companies. Scope Reporting to the Associate Vice-President (Research) and the Director, Office of Research Services (ORS), the incumbent will manage the technology development and transfer processes, and act as a liaison and promote research collaborations between University faculty members and partners in the industrial, business and government sectors. The incumbent will have outstanding interpersonal skills, proven written and oral presentation ability, proven negotiating skills, proven understanding of technology management, a background in negotiating, licensing and intellectual property development, and an understanding of the patenting process. Candidates should hold degrees in the natural sciences, engineering, or biomedical sciences, and business management/law, or have the equivalent combination of education, training and experience from which comparable skills have been acquired. Responsibilities: o Participate in the management team for the Technology Transfer Office. o Identify technology arising from University research. o Manage the patenting and licensing processes. o Evaluate University technologies and inventions for commercial potential. o Conduct market research, where appropriate. oFoster sponsored research collaborations between University faculty and the industrial, business and government sectors. o Market University-owned technology. o Promote the development of spin-off companies. o Identify collaborative R & D opportunities. o Secure funding for the development of University technologies. o Conduct internal seminars on technology transfer and industry liaison. Depending on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate, the University expects to provide the incumbent with the opportunity to participate in the management and development of UST, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of the University responsible for the management of intellectual property.
