Re: POLICY ON FACULTY RELEASE TIME LARRY WAXLER 10 Feb 1995 08:56 EST

Here at the University of Southern Maine, all release time must be
approved by the appropriate Dean in advance of any formal contract/grant
applications or for any other reason. The question as to how much
release time a faculty member gets is a direct function of how much time
was comitted in the grant(s) which, we hope, bears some relationship to
the amount of work actually being done. There is no real limit placed on
a faculty member's time comittment on research projects. Rather, each
project that is submitted is weighed in terms of its contribution toward
the college's mission and the extent to which the college can afford
(educationally) to release a faculty member from teaching a course(s) and
whether a suitable replacement can be found.

Faculty members can, again with their Dean's approval, commit up to one
day a week to additional activities outside their normal teaching load
and receive additional compensation. Much as a faculty member could
receive a stipend for teaching a one course overload, they are allowed to
participate in some "overload" research.
