At our institution (University of Wisconsin-River Falls), faculty are under
contract from some day in August (2 weeks before the beginning of
class, if I remember correctly) until the end of Spring semester.
Consequently we could not--even if we wanted to--pay faculty
additional salary during the Christmas break, any more than we could
pay them extra if they worked weekends.

I can imagine paying folks during the summer for work done during the
year--though I doubt that our accounting office would like it much.  But I
can't imagine any way that we could pay folks extra during their nine
month contract.  And I certainly can't imagine going to a granting agency
and asking for more dollars to pay faculty for time when they are already
under contract and being paid.
