Kiss of death Mike (Spanky) McCallister 21 Nov 1994 10:09 EST

I've always reported to the academic side--Grad Deans,
Provosts, etc.
Having a Sponsored Programs outfit under a development office, and
this is just opinion, sounds like there would be too many conflicts
between the motiviation for bringing funds into the university--
gifts versus purposed money for research and service. I'd not go
 into that situation at gunpoint.
How many of you guys report to a Graduate Dean? Like anything
else in higher ed, the pendumlum seems to swinging two ways at
once-- reducing the role of the Grad Dean and returning those
fucntions to the Colleges, OR re-instituting and re-centralizing
Grad study. I feel like my reporting to a Grad Dean takes me
another step away from the mainstream of Academic Affairs and
faculty development, which resides at the Provost/VP for Academic
Affairs, and therefore reduces my ability to interact with Deans
and Dept. Chairs. What's your opnion?
