I am interested in how other Universities and medical centers are handling
the issue of fringe benefit packages for postdoctoral fellows. The University
of Massachusetts currently has a policy of providing benefits to postdoctoral
fellows that are equal to benefits provided to faculty and other employees.
Consequently, funding sources are charged at our negotiated fringe rate.
NIH training grants and other private sources often will not pick up the
additional cost of providing the full benefit package.
I understand from speaking with colleagues that other Universities may be
budgeting and charging post doc fringe at a lower rate which may be more
appropriate given their short-term appointments.
I would appreciate any feedback and information on this issue.
