When Coastal Carolina University left the U. South Carolina system we
applied for our own 503(c)3 exemption. The following information was
provided to me in a memo from our univ. counsel:
"I sposke with their Director of Exempt Organizations-Technical Division,
in Washington, a Mr. Mark Owens (202-622-8200). He advised that we
do not need to make an application or to request a letter of determination,
but simply to use our Employer's Identification Number (EIN) for documentation
of our tax exempt status."
Apparently the 57- (or some other part) of the number identifies us as a
tax exempt entity. I have sent copies of this memo with several proposals
where proof of tax exempt status is required and so far it has not been
questioned.
PS - we did have to apply for state exemption, even though we (like Bowling
Green) are state institutions - your laws in Ky may be different.
