At the end of Spring Quarter, we invited all WWU faculty who had either
submitted proposals or received grants during the year to a reception.  The
University President gave a nice talk on the importance of research and
acknowledged the effort involved in seeking external funding.  We had a very
nice spread (including salmon) and everyone especially enjoyed talking to the
researchers from other departments and colleges.  The feedback we received
was really positive--the researchers sincerely appreciated the acknowledgment.

Maybe you could do something similar for your fisheries research staff.
