In response to the request of how to pay retired faculty, I offer the follwing:
At EVMS we have a large base of community faculty who although affiliated with
EVMS and perform research under the auspices of EVMS ARE NOT paid through our
payroll system.  They are either paid through one of the area hospitals or
through their private pratice.  This poses a problem with federal funding.  We
pay these individuals contractually and thus list them under Consortium/
Contractul  Costs on the NIH PHS 398 forms.  Obviously an explanation must
be given for paying a principal investigator contractually.  The only other
option for us is to somehow have the PI placed on our payroll.
