It is interesting that I was just on the other end of a consent form for
a Taxol study at BWH/Boston.  The consent form did denote "patient may be
responsible for costs incurred should insurance by denied".  My parents
(70 yo) were incredibly concerned by this statement and went so far as
discussing how they would even give up their life savings.  The
consent form was unclear whether it was the
drug or
entire treatment that may not be covered by the study.  Clearly the
consent form could have been written better - it certainly has made me
think twice when I review these forms coming across my desk.
