Funding Source Censorship

Ok, let's evaluate each funding source to see if they are "front" organizations
for socially unacceptable organizations and then prohibit faculty from applying
for funding from these agencies. CTR is definitely out - smoking and second
hand smoke are definitely bad for your health. How about the National Pork
Producers and the National Beef Council? Too much red meat is bad for your
health. No funding from the chemical industry either - we all know that
chewmical plants cause pollution. And of course no funding from NIH because
they allow the use of animals in research . . .
Why not just allow our faculty to seek funding from any legal source and let the
research stand or fall on its merits aand not on the merits or faults of the
sponsoring agency or group? I, for one, worry more about the quality of the
faculty member's proposal, grant, and resulting sscience than whether or not the
funding is "tainted" by some connection to a particular group.
The free exchange of ideas is the lifeblood of an academic institution and I
find any limitation, other than those intended to prevent violence, to be
contrary to our fundamental mission.
