I think Dr. Biernowski raises some very valid points on the ethics of funding
research. I know that certain institutes at my university are funded in part by
the DOD and not surprisingly many of the publications put out by such
institutes in the recent past were largely supportive of arms build-ups and
dismissive of alternate defense strategies, the environmental impacts of
weaponry, etc. This was at a time when Gorbachev had steered the Soviet Union
away from the path of Cold War confrontation!

It is also noteworthy that the DOD stepped in after Dept of Education cut back
on post-secondary funding.
