Now is the time for action. Please read the following note that I received this morning and respond by writing, calling, or e-mailing your Congressional Representatives!! _______ Hi: I just read a note you posted about the availability of FR to Federal (D)epository Libraries (FDL)(yes, ASU is one). Besides letting you know the correct name of the program (minor since most non-libraries don't even know it exists... congrats to you on your knowledge) BUT also to let you know that this part of the program is in trouble. Recent House of Rep. action eliminated 1.5Million from this specific program to bring GPO into the electronic world. If you and you fellow collegue in the area of funding/grants can contact you Senators (i.e. if you culd put out the word on you listserved that your grants epople read) asking that they specifically reinstate the funding for the 1.5 M to "distribution of govern- ment information to Federal Depository Libraries in electronic form", we can hopefully get the money put back and FR and other gov. info up and out in electronic so people like you can make use of it thru the FDLs. For more information Contact Anne Heanue, ALA Washington Office (202)547-4440 or call me. ANY help quickly would be really appreciated. Stephen Hayes, Ref and Public Documents Libn (Depository Libn.) Univ of Notre Dame Voice: (219) 631-5268 ________________________________________________________ (I'm sorry about the mistake in nomenclature.) If you could share this with others at your campus who would also be interested in the electronic Federal Register (such as Legal Council, or Government Relations), we could possible generate quite a response. Below, I have included some information from Gopher that lists all of the Reps. who have email. There is not a similar list for the Senate; only two Senators use e-mail! There is always the snail mail! UNITED STATES HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONSTITUENT ELECTRONIC MAIL SYSTEM We welcome your inquiry to the House of Representatives Constituent Electronic Mail System. Currently, twenty-seven Members of the U.S. House of Representatives have been assigned public electronic mailboxes that may be accessed by their constituents. The results of the six month public mail pilot have been very encouraging. The nature and character of the incoming electronic mail has demonstrated that this capability will be an invaluable source of information on constituent opinion. We are now in the process of expanding the project to other Members of Congress, as technical, budgetary and staffing constraints allow. A number of House committees have also been assigned public electronic mailboxes. The names and electronic mailbox addresses of these committees are listed below after the information about participating Representatives. Please review the list of participating Representatives below, and if the Congressional District in which you reside is listed, follow the instructions below to begin communicating by electronic mail with your Representative. If your Representative is not yet on-line, please be patient. U.S. REPRESENTATIVES PARTICIPATING IN THE CONSTITUENT ELECTRONIC MAIL SYSTEM. Hon. Thomas E. However, if your Representative is taking part in the project, we request that you send a letter or postcard by U.S. Mail to that Representative at the address listed above with your name and internet address, followed by your postal (geographical) address. The primary goal of this program is to allow Members to better serve their CONSTITUENTS, and this postal contact is the only sure method currently available of verifying that a user is a resident of a particular congressional district. In addition, constituents who communicate with their Representative by electronic mail should be aware that Members will sometimes respond to their messages by way of the U.S. Postal Service. This method of reply will help to ensure confidentiality, a concern that is of upmost importance to the House of Representatives.
