We have two distinct tracks for research faculty: (1) Ladder track
:[teaching] Prof., Assoc. Prof., and Assist Prof, and (2) Research Track:
Sr. Research Scientist, Research Scientist, Associate Research Scientist.
The main difference is that the ladder track provides institutional support
, tenure, etc., while the research track does not provide institutional
support and is 100% supported by grants & contracts. When I have faculty
who have retired as a "Professor" and become "Emeritus", they will also be
appointed as a "Senior Research Scientist" if they are going to continue to
continue to do research AND are supported by one or more grants & contracts.
This usually means a change to a lower salary level, since they will no
longer be receiving the partial salary support from the institution.
Alternatively, he could designate another faculty member to take over the
grant, if permission has been requested and granted by the sponsoring
agency. It is important to ensure that he has both an appointment, and
adequate space, to fulfill the commitment of your institution to the
sponsoring agency.

Subject: Eligibility Criteria for PIs

Professor X is retiring at the end of June and will officially be off the
university payroll. He has a grant which does not terminate until late
next Fall. He has been given Professor Emeritus status recently, and his
department has agreed to continue to provide lab space and other
necessary support. We do not have a written institutional policy
regarding eligibility criteria for PIs. I generally require that a PI be
on the payroll, but have never before encountered the Professor Emeritus
situation. How would you handle this at your institution? Would
Professor X still be eligible after retirement to serve as a single PI on
the grant, would you require the department chair to become a co-PI, or
would you suggest another alternative? (Note that the funding agency has
no concerns as the grant agreement is with the university and not
Professor X.) Thanks in advance for your help!
