Eligibility Criteria for PIs

Professor X is retiring at the end of June and will officially be off the
university payroll. He has a grant which does not terminate until late
next Fall. He has been given Professor Emeritus status recently, and his
department has agreed to continue to provide lab space and other
necessary support. We do not have a written institutional policy
regarding eligibility criteria for PIs. I generally require that a PI be
on the payroll, but have never before encountered the Professor Emeritus
situation. How would you handle this at your institution? Would
Professor X still be eligible after retirement to serve as a single PI on
the grant, would you require the department chair to become a co-PI, or
would you suggest another alternative? (Note that the funding agency has
no concerns as the grant agreement is with the university and not
Professor X.) Thanks in advance for your help!
