INTERNAL RESEARCH GRANTS Mike McCallister 16 May 1994 11:23 EST

We have taken to sending our PI's with matching needs that are
outside the ability of either their departments or colleges
(and almost everything is with our budget) to the
university foundation for assistance in securing match. We
have had spotty success thus far, but are hopefule on
Challenge Gratns, like those to NEH, that this will be
useful, particularly in showing a *plan* for securing funds.
I amnot holding my breath, but it might work.
Otherwise match comes out of the department and colelges
hide. There is a very small matching fund controlled by
our Graduate Dean, but it only takes a couple of
NSFproposals' to wipe that sucker out.

Our internal grants program is mainly for newly arrived faculty, research teams
and well established research centers. However, has anyone on the discussion
list, have any experience with matching funding? I mean for example asking a
faculty member to find financial support for his/her research by a private
corporation and then having it matched by the internal grants program of the
university. Could we also ask the deans to match funding, since I would presume,
like us, these internal grants program are managed by the research offices of
the universities. Research partnerships programs between university and industry
are becoming more frequent in Canada, specially here in Quebec, and we are
looking at ways of having industry put in some funds in grants not always
contracts.

Anybody with any experience or good comments on this!

Thanks
