Searching for Grants Using Computer Software Michael Ludwick 05 May 1994 12:40 EST

Here at the College of William & Mary, I help faculty find funding
sources primarily for their research projects. To do so, I use
various book publications that are useful but cumbersome, as you well
know I'm sure. I've been looking for a good data base that contains
much of the same information as in something like the
"Annual Register of Grant Support" and is easily searchable. I've
tried the Chroncile of Higher Education's "Guide to Grants" but
since it is just a listing of grants awarded by different
organizations as listed in the Journal of Philanthropy (or something
to that effect), it's not that useful. I've heard about SPIN and
Dialog On-Line and was wondering if anyone knew anything about these
(and other similar computer searching aids) and whether they are
helpful or not. Currently we have a membership with an organization
that will do these types of searches for us. Any idea what they
might be using?

Any insights on this matter would be extremely helpful.
