Grants Accounting/management systems Liz Mazzella 19 Apr 1994 07:28 EST

Thanks to those of you who have responded to my question on computer
systems for grants management/accounting. I note that several of you
responded directly to me rather than to the list, in one case, someone
specifically did not want to go "live" on the list --I know we all
want to be careful about product endorsements or critiques or
the appearance thereof, so no problem. No one should post anything here
that would make them feel uncomfortable or possibly put them in an ackward
postition. However, in a couple cases where people responded directly to
me, it was unclear if they intended to speak only to me or just incorrectly
addressed their messages.

Remember, if you want to share your response with the group (which I encourage
you to do in most cases) you must send your response to
xxxxxx@ALBNYDH2.BITNET--NOT to the individual who generated the
message to which you are responding.

BTW, the general jist on the computing issue is that most accounting
functions are done on mainframes--or customized systems and are
often part of the overall university accounting system. Proposal
management, IRB, Animal Welfare and Faculty Interest functions
run the gamut from customized pc based/database systems to
prepackaged systems. The prepackaged systems seem to manage some
of these functions well, but not all.

Rumor has it that Duke has a paperless system that does everything but
write the proposal... If anyone from Duke is signed on, I would love
to hear some of the details of your system--

Thanks
