As Jacquie indicated, we have had this ongoing discussion for some time. I
currently subscribe to SPIN online; I do not have the disk space
necessary to run the micro version. Advantages of online include: there
is no maintenance on my part; and, I am able to receive my search results
immediately via e-mail. However, because the subscription cost is
pricey (in addition to the annual fee, I pay $10 per search), I am very
conscious of how I tailor searches and how many I run. (With the micro
version, I could access the information as often as needed without
dreading receipt of the quarterly billing statement! I would pay more,
however, for the micro's annual subscription fee.) I have considered
exploring what kind of "deal" SPIN may offer the Montana System, or even
a similar arrangement between my office and the university library, but
have not yet formalized that inquiry.
Although I have nothing with which to compare the abilities of SPIN, I have
been pleased with the flexibility. Their customer service people are
helpful and responsive. The system is powerful; yet I currently only rely
upon the search component for locating potential sponsors. All in all, I
am satisfied with it's ability, although one of my main reasons for
initiating this discussion was wondering whether or not I'm getting
enough "bang for my buck." I also rely heavily upon STIS, FEDIX, and the
CFDA, searchable through our local gopher, as well as paper sources.
