Colleagues, Here is a synopsis of my pathway to the RA profession: Graduated from a small college, with a self-directed BA in psychology. I intended to go on for a Ph.D., but life got in the way. As a mother in a young beginning family, I went to work as an office receptionist & learned a great deal about the office environment. I found I had a talent working with numbers (bookkeeping back in the days before computers) & graduated into an accounting position with a small insurance agency. After I had my 2nd child, I left this job for a few months & then eventually ended up at a departmental accounting position with a university. I enjoyed learning the ropes & eventually ended up running a medium sized department accounting office, where we had a fair number of diverse grants. After 13 years as a departmental post-award administrator, I became interested in learning about the pre-award processes & took a job at the university's medical school doing both pre & post-award functions as a departmental administrator. After several years, I took a central RA position with a larger cancer center at the same university. Each of these job changes allowed me to learn & grow, adding to my knowledge & experience base. As I moved up the latter, I found I had less & less direct interaction with faculty researches, which I always had thoroughly enjoyed. Following ~ 19 years at this research intensive university, I took a job at a smaller university in their central SP office, where I worked my way up to a senior RA, into assistant director & then associate director of the office, which I retired from in 2017. However, I felt like I had more to give to the profession & have since worked part time for 2 PUI universities, so I'm semi-retired & have been for over 3 years. Other than enjoying working directly with faculty investigators & their staff, I very much enjoyed the professional training activities I did & the mentoring of of 2 very dear former colleagues. I was always fortunate to have mentor myself & it has been great to continue giving in the profession - I wouldn't change any moment in my career progression.
