Hello!

Ball State has recently "floated" out of RUI eligibility based on BSU's PhD graduate degrees conferred in NSF supported fields in the previous two AYs. Per the NSF program officer we spoke to, "it is not uncommon that institutions may 'float' in and out of eligibility."

As a reminder/refresher the eligibility criteria is:
“Eligible PUIs are accredited colleges and universities (including two-year community colleges) that award Associate's degrees, Bachelor's degrees, and/or Master's degrees in NSF-supported fields, but have awarded 20 or fewer Ph.D./D.Sci. degrees in all NSF-supported fields during the combined previous two academic years.”

As you can imagine, our faculty are very upset. This is a very low threshold that, when exceeded, has large implications.

So, to appropriately address this concern internally, we are seeking insight from our SPO colleagues on their RUI status: How are you monitoring for this potential? How are communications about the status occurring within your institution? Is it anticipated that your status will remain constant or is there the potential for it to change once or even year to year? Have you been close to exceeding the threshold for eligibility or have you recently (since 2014) fallen comfortably below the limit?
