RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT MANAGER

The Center for Social and Behavioral Science (CSBS) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is seeking Research Development Manager to focus on the Social and Behavioral Sciences and health including identifying, expanding, and supporting new research initiatives involving campus faculty and external stakeholders; coordinating new, multi-disciplinary, multi-investigator proposals; and working to build the research capacity and biomedical funding of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In addition, this position will provide support to new centers, especially collaborative programs with both clinical and community components, related to social and behavioral science and health research areas.

The Center for Social and Behavioral Science (CSBS) works with members of the university research community to develop new, innovative research projects that explore unique and unexplored areas in the social and behavioral sciences. CSBS also creates interdisciplinary networking groups and fosters small pilot studies through the CSBS Small Grant Program, bringing together interdisciplinary research teams to develop ambitious research projects that show promise for external funding.

Major Duties & Responsibilities:

 Analyze, align and strategically match organizational strengths with short term emphasis and long term directions of funding agencies.
 Identify new interdisciplinary research opportunities and provide support in the development of new major research initiatives.
 Identify common and complementary research interests and assemble teams to address research and funding opportunities.
 Work collaboratively with CSBS faculty in catalyzing and coordinating new research programs and research community-building initiatives; act as a liaison to stakeholders serving as subject matter experts.
 Provide faculty with elements of research planning in an effort to help them to strategically approach research and funding opportunities.
 Coordinate with faculty/staff to assist with creating and coordinating large interdisciplinary proposals.
 Conduct targeted grant searches and provide grant development and processing support for faculty in the social and behavioral sciences, track active and upcoming solicitations and programs.
 Maintain information on proposal preparation requirements for relevant federal, state, local sponsors, private foundations and industry partners. Manage the CSBS Small Grant submission process for the Chair and Advisory Committee in assigned area.
 Coordinate interdisciplinary workshops in order to provide faculty across disciplines with an interactive forum to facilitate synergistic collaborations and explore resources and services to spearhead innovative research endeavors.
 Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements and Qualifications:

Education:

Required: PhD or advanced degree in social or behavioral science and relevant experience coordinating research or Master’s degree in same fields and a minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of relevant experience. Alternate degrees and degree fields and combination of degree and experience will be considered/accepted depending on nature and depth of experience and degree and coursework as it relates to this position.

Experience:

Required: Relevant experience should include research development, providing expert guidance to faculty and project management. Additional required experience includes developing research proposals, coordinating research initiatives, events, and workshops and writing and/or presenting technical papers, contract/grant proposals or technical presentations. Experience should demonstrate knowledge of social/behavioral-related funding agencies and programs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Excellent interpersonal skills, outstanding oral and written communication skills, proven organization skills, and an aptitude for learning new skills, tools, and processes. Demonstrated knowledge of programs, policies and procedures of health-related funding agencies. Expertise in the social and behavioral science area; expertise with local and regional clinical and community partners to advance translational projects. Understanding of the National Science Foundation (NSF) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) research funding programs.

Proposed start date: As soon as possible after closing date of search.

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Appointment Status: FLSA exempt, 100%-time Academic Professional position, 12-month service basis renewable annually pending success within the position.
