The Grant Writer and Editor position reports to the Associate Director for Grant Development and Medical Editing in the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI). The position will support faculty and multi-disciplinary research groups to develop high-quality competitive grant applications as part of the CTSI Grant Development program activities. The position will provide editing and writing services for grant proposals as well as the development of ancillary materials (letters of support, biosketches, etc ) for research and training grant proposals. The position will support early-career faculty with manuscript editing services and help to develop educational trainings, seminars, and workshops on grant and manuscript development. And 4) contributing directly to the success of CTSI Programs (e.g. Team Science, Mentored Career Development, Pilots) as required. The Grant Writer and Editor will participate in preparation of applications in response to funding opportunities, for individual faculty and in support of departments, centers and other institutionally cross-cutting entities, to pursue research aligned with the Medical Center strategic plan. He/she will work closely with the Associate Director for Grant Development and Medical Editing and other stakeholders to (a) increase the number of, and improve the competitiveness of, grant applications, and (b) contribute to the development of training and other educational materials related to grant and manuscript development, to further support faculty in pursuing funding for research. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: • Minimum Requirements: o Bachelor’s Degree o 2 years of experience editing and/or writing grant proposals and/or manuscripts • Preferences o Graduate degree preferred; other degrees considered with appropriate experience o Experience working in a busy academic medical center o Related Professional Certifications (e.g. Board of Editors in the Life Sciences, Medical Writer Certified, Grant Professional Certified) REPORTS TO: Associate Director for Grant Development and Medical Editing, Clinical and Translational Science Institute LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION: N/A ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Please list 10-12 accountabilities with no bullet points) 1. Grant Editing: With oversight from the Associate Director for Grant Development and Medical Editing, edit grant proposals for grammatical correctness, space requirements and funder guidelines, and other strategic considerations; 2. Grant Writing: With oversight from the Associate Director for Grant Development and Medical Editing, draft sections of infrastructure (e.g., equipment, construction, training) applications to foster improved research resources across the institution; 3. CTSI-Supported Early-Career Faculty: Provide editing services for grant applications and manuscripts submitted by early-career scholars to facilitate their success; 4. CTSI Pilot Grantees: Provide editing services for grant applications and manuscripts submitted by CTSI pilot awardees to facilitate manuscript development and preparation of external grant applications; 5. Education and Training: Participate in workshops, seminars, webinars, and other educational activities related to grant and manuscript preparation for the Wake Forest School of Medicine community, and for specific departments/centers on request; 6. Manuscripts: Edit drafts of manuscripts for publication in biomedical journals; advise faculty on journal choices; provide guidance in answering reviewers' comments; 7. CTSI Website: Regularly update content related to grant and manuscript development for the CTSI website, including but not limited to boilerplate content for grant applications, the K Writers Toolkit, and the T Writers Toolkit (including the development of a T-Tables Service); 8. Other CTSI projects: Work collaboratively with CTSI personnel on ad hoc projects, such as extramural funding opportunities specific to the CTSI, writing and editing for special reports, white papers, or other specialized documents. 9. Database Updates: Periodically update the grant proposal and manuscript editing database to reflect when proposals are funded or manuscripts published, for annual reports and other needs; 10. Information Resource: Answer questions from members of the Wake Forest School of Medicine community related to preparing manuscripts or grant applications; direct questions to appropriate institutional areas as needed.
