RESPONSIBILITIES
Grants and Contracts Associates are an integral part of the NIU Sponsored Programs Administration (SPA) team. The SPA team encompasses administrators who specialize in pre and post-award administration to support faculty throughout the sponsored funding lifecycle. The Associate provides budget management support to NIU faculty and staff and oversees accounting, compliance, cash management, and other non-technical reporting and auditing requirements for individual awards.
NIU is an emerging research institution building on our research strengths and Chicagoland’s place as a world leader in innovation while continuing to engage undergraduate and graduate students in faculty-driven and student-initiated research, public service and artistry. The University is located approximately 65 miles from downtown Chicago and is a short drive from the vibrant western suburbs and Rockford metropolitan area. The University’s close proximity to Chicago and Rockford enables strong collaboration with regional national labs and local innovation spaces that foster research and entrepreneurship opportunities across disciplines. Our research programs extend beyond the Illinois region with faculty conducting cutting-edge research and service programs with U.S. and International collaborators.
As a key member of the SPA team, the Associate works directly with faculty and staff to manage a broad portfolio of grants, contracts, and subcontracts. The Associate interprets sponsor policies and regulations, counsels faculty and campus on these regulations, and represents the University in discussions with the sponsoring agency regarding award matters. The Associate also forecasts cash requirements, manages cash flow, prepares and submits financial reports, and facilitates sub-recipient monitoring.
