Question about fringe benefit charges post-award Ted Russo 07 Sep 2016 08:24 EST

Hi all,

We occasionally have a rare occurrence where a particular person is
fully grant funded (100%) and his/her actual fringe benefit charges are
greater than what we budgeted for in the proposal submission. (i.e., our
pre-award team really has no way of knowing what benefits package a
"TBD" research technician will choose.).

So, my question is....how does your university handle fringe charges on
grants on the back end. Do you charge actual (as we do), or do your
grant accounting folks charge a composite (negotiated) rate to
grants/contracts and the university covers any underage (as in the above
scenario) and makes adjustments to the negotiated fringe rate at the end
of the year based on the accumulated actual costs on the entire grant pool.

I hope the above is clear. Thank you in advance colleagues!

Ted Russo
