I can certainly sympathize with faculty about administrative burden. But what many faculty don't realize is the extent to which we in the SPO protect them from administrative burden. We filter the federal, state and institutional requirements down to those that the researcher needs to know and react to. Can you imagine the reaction of the faculty if they were supposed to be knowledgeable of, and respond to, every administrative requirement that we all deal with on a daily basis?

Yet, we still hear the complaints about having to comply with IACUC, IRB, RCR, Uniform Guidance, conflict of interest, etc. Don't they realize that this is the cost of seeking and accepting grants? They can't insulate themselves from their responsibility by sending emails to spam.

I believe that the research administrator community does a great job in minimizing the administrative burden on researchers. That's our job. I take it seriously. I just wish that some faculty would take their responsibilities as researchers just as seriously.

Your point is well taken. However, there are instances where we literally BEG to help our investigators, and are rebuffed or ignored. Then the blame falls on us when something is late or incomplete. It's a two-way street. Faculty need to let us help them, too.

This is becoming more pitiful than humorous. If we don't accept the reality of administrative burden and its terrible impact on productivity, we will never have the empathy and attitude needed to be a truly helpful resource to faculty.

Along the same lines, we have another PI who suggested to my boss that we have an expedited review process for "senior" researchers like him, so that he could just submit his proposal essentially without review. Because he is so good at it.

His last proposal was submitted with incorrect information to the agency and missing internal approvals because he submitted it at the last minute and would not hear of making any changes to it. After it was submitted (we always try to submit, even in these situations), I required him to re-route the internal approvals with corrected information and to secure the necessary signatures. I guess his time isn't so valuable that he doesn't mind fixing his errors after the fact.

Sadly, the opinion of faculty that the SPO is a burden to be avoided, rather than a resource to help them, seems to be prevalent.

This reminds me of a conversation I once had with a PI wherein he stated:
"Every email that comes from your office, I delete without reading."

Which may have, in part, explained why his applications always had so many errors when they got to our office.

I received this today from a PI in response to my inquiry about why he had not returned a (required) audit questionnaire:

I have no idea what you are referring to. Don't take this the wrong way, but everything from your office (and any university administrative account in general) that has multiple recipients goes straight to my spam folder and gets deleted weekly. I just happened to check this folder today looking for something else.

I'm not sure what the "right" way is to take his comment.
