Responsibilities: The Special Opportunities and Program Projects Officer (SOPPO) position supports the development of new and emerging research, as well as continuation of established multi-component program grants and contracts, that serves the strategic scientific mission of GUMC.  This entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial position uses proven expertise in research administration to identify new or under-marketed funding opportunities, as well as continuation of established multi-component program grants and contracts.  The position is responsible for opportunity identification, team building, proposal development and submission of these opportunities.  The position provides support to high-value and large-scale, program project proposals under the guidance of the Dean for Research.  The position also promotes development of collaborative partnerships across the medical center and other University campuses that grow and expand scientific research at the University.  The position reports directly to the Dean for Research and works closely with the SAVP for Sponsored Research, GUMC Senior Leadership, faculty across the medical center, and the Deputy Director of Research Development Services to identify, coordinate, prepare and submit multi-disciplinary proposals and applications.

Degree:  Bachelor’s degree and 5 -10 years of research administration experience in a high-volume setting, ideally in an academic environment or more than 12 years of research administration experience in a high-volume setting, ideally in an academic environment.

Qualifications:
Expertise with all components of NIH, NSF and DOD grants and contracts,
Knowledge of administrative, cost and principles related to sponsored research activities including OMB A-21, A-110, A-133, and OMB Uniform Guidance
Experience with NIH funding mechanisms, including multi-component mechanisms
Experience in coordinating large-scale, complex applications
Experience and expertise in multi-program, multi-institutional budget and proposal development for complex NIH funding mechanisms, including P01, P30, T32, S10
Ability to perform in a deadline driven, high pressure environment, and the ability to interact successfully with a diverse customer base
Ability to perform in an “interpreneurial” setting, to identify new and unique solutions to strategic issues
Ability to function in a fast-paced academic setting
Excellent organization and verbal and written communication skills
Certified Research Administration (CRA) strongly encouraged
