Jennifer,

So nice to hear from you in the sunny South!

Here at the University of Southern Maine (where it is 51 degrees this
morning) we count the base award +/- any subsequent modifications. It
does become tricky when the base and any modifications occur in
different years. In those cases, we could show a negative award in a
subsequent year!

We do not count early terminations or transfers to other institutions
as we consider those to fall into the same category as a general
underspending of an award – something that we would only recognize in
expenditure reports.

Larry

How do you count the awards for your institution for your published
total awards received (a.k.a. "Bragging rights.")

Do you count all awards received (positive numbers only or "gross"
awards.)

OR

Do you count all awards received less any de-obligations from early
terminations, transfers, etc. (positive numbers less negative numbers
for "net" awards.)

OR

Do you do something else?

Thanks!
