Anna, we require a conflict of interest statement and a plan or letter from the Primary/PI's institution as to how the conflict will be managed and vice versa.

This is an interesting discussion. Thanks for posting your query, Sarah. And thanks to those who have replied.

I'm curious what others do when the family members are not at the same institution, but working together on a proposal or project. I find this happens often, and it's easy to see why when you imagine two academics sharing their lives, and developing proposal ideas at the kitchen table. So do you require the same sort of documentation when a subaward or subcontract is issued to a family members institution where they are serving as sub-PI or otherwise participating in the project? I would expect when working under contracts, that the institution's bid process would apply and take the nepotism issues into account. But often that process doesn't apply to subawards, where the collaborating institution was included in the proposal and approved by the sponsor.

Thanks to all,
Anna Dore
