If the piece of equipment is old and has been fully depreciated, under your institution's property management  policy it probably can be declared as surplus, and the policy may also describe how to dispose of surplus property including the sale of it.

One of our PIs purchased a piece of equipment from one of his NIH grants several years ago.  The purchase price was approximately $15K.  Due to it’s age the equipment continues to breakdown and the repair costs have exceeded $1,000 each time.  The PI wants to sell this piece, thinking it might have some residual value and put the money into lab supplies.  Can this be done?  If so, how?
