I sent an inquiry to the FastLane Help Desk on this very issue regarding an IOS preliminary proposal. Their response indicated that the incorrect page numbers in the Table of Contents would not be an issue with a preliminary proposal and would not result in the return of the submission without review. However, we did include hard returns in the Intellectual Merit subsection of the project summary. As a last resort, we removed all hard returns within the section and re-saved the summary. The Table of Contents automatically corrected to one page and we successfully submitted the preliminary proposal. I would be interested in others’ experiences with this issue and wonder if NSF will address it. Thanks for the advice about checking character limits and conversion of characters into something unintentional. Regards, Sarah Sarah B. We are in the process of researching an issue with Fastlane and the new project summary section and I wanted to see if anyone else was having the same problem (and possibly give some heads-up). I don’t know if the project summary when the last tab is saved gives a message that it is over the page limit or not (or what the character count is) but I have been checking those my PI have loaded using the print screen to make sure they are only one page when everything is done. However, I just found out (on one I submitted yesterday and several others co-workers have in work/submitted) that the print screen may show one page but the table of contents shows 2. Suspecting that the character count requirement (which is given on Fastlane under the project summary tab-not in the guidelines) was over the limit I checked that and it was almost 200 characters under so we don’t know why the TOC is showing 2 pages for it. (At least 2 others with this happening to it also were also under the character count but I believe we did find one that we double checked and it was over the character limit so be careful out there :) ---And be sure to check the project summary box entries for ‘weird’ characters as we have seen random insertion/change of characters—mainly ?s for other letters or punctuation.)
