I'= ve reviewed many different university policies on line, and I find that the= definitions vary greatly (and many don't provide any definition at all). = Some seem to encompass faculty course overloads, as this is work paid by th= e university but outside of regular faculty workload. Some specify that th= is is short-term, one time task-based assignments only, whether paid by the= university or by an external sponsor. Some specify that this definition n= ever applies to sponsored work, no matter what flavor of definition they've= chosen. It's enough to make you feel like it's everything and nothing all= at once. Here, we have many faculty who regularly teach the maximum allowed number o= f overload courses per semester (2), as well as those who complete short-te= rm task-based assignments that are in addition to normal teaching load (i.e= . special curriculum development), and some from each category who would al= so like to be paid to work on grants (summer or release only), all of which= makes our T&E reporting messy at best. I would love to hear from any of you who have wrestled with this issue, and= what compromise you came to that passes audit (I won't pretend that I expe= ct clear winners, in any case). Thank you very much for your insights, -Amy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Amy Velasco Director, Office of Sponsored Research University of La Verne 1950 Third Street La Verne, CA 91750 (909) 593-3511, ext. 4772 http://www.laverne.edu/ Confidential Note The information in this email and all attachments are confidential informat= ion only for use of the individual or entity addressed.
