Agreed, but if such a transaction is directed internally for his or own benefit it may still result in a taxable event for the individual.

This is usually acceptable. Often, the original recipient can strike a deal with his/her employer to give a talk or serve on a review panel with the understanding that they won't have to take time off if the honorarium goes to the institution.
Furthermore, institutions often allow the funds to be credited to a discretionary account controlled by the original recipient.
