The San Diego State University Research Foundation has an opportunity for an experienced professional to fill the role of a Sponsored Research Coordinator in the Sponsored Research Administration department.

San Diego State University Research Foundation is a non-profit, auxiliary organization established to further the objectives of San Diego State University.  San Diego State University is currently designated as a "research university" with high research activity by the Carnegie Foundation and soon expects to be Doctoral/Research-Extensive.   SDSU faculty received $145 million in grants and contracts for research and program administration during fiscal year 2010-2011.   The Research Foundation’s core function is to assist SDSU faculty and staff in developing and administering these externally funded projects.  The Sponsored Research Administration Department is primarily responsible for the post award administration, compliance and fiscal management of these programs.

The SRA Coordinator is responsible for the supervision and day-to-day management of a team of post award professionals.  In addition to supervisory responsibilities the Coordinator is responsible for managing a complex and diverse workload that is comprised of grants and contracts awarded from federal, state and local government and private funding agencies, as well as donations and institutional and self support activities.
Core responsibilities of the position include a combination of the following:
• Play a lead role in the selection and hiring and training of post award administrators and support staff • Provide feedback and support to post award staff to foster professional growth and development including: mentoring, monitoring and evaluation of performance, analysis and assignment of workload, oversight of tasks and advanced problem solving • Provide guidance and support to post award administrators on communication and interaction with faculty, staff and sponsor agencies • Provide oversight and serve as a one-up authorization approval on expenditure documents and/or internal management processes as authorized • Administration and management of a workload that is comprised of complex research programs for faculty with large research portfolios, complex budgets, or projects that require an advanced level of expertise and understanding of research administration • Participate in department planning and needs assessment; play a lead role in outreach and promotional activities, development or delivery of departmental/interdepartmental training, or other initiatives focused on process or systems improvement for the organization

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Business Administration, Accounting or related field, or 4 years of progressive responsibility in an institution of higher education, research institution or non-profit organization or related accounting experience;  AND A minimum of 8 years of direct experience in the field of research administration.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities required
The Coordinator must possess the necessary skills essential to conduct and/or direct special projects, including researching, compiling and analyzing information needed to problem solve and resolve issues and/or reconcile funds.  This position requires the incumbent to exercise independent judgment and discretion when working with faculty, funding agency personnel, and SDSU Research Foundation and University personnel.  Must be self directed and able to prioritize and organize his/her own tasks and duties as well as the priorities and tasks of his/her employees. The position requires advanced planning and organizational skills; the ability to anticipate problems and address them proactively, understanding the broad impact and effects of issues at multiple levels and the ability to make decisions and determine solutions in a timely manner.  Thorough knowledge of current computer and office automation equipment and software. Working knowledge of governmental accounting princip!
 les, sponsor agency reporting requirements, audit policies and OMB circulars and Federal Acquisition Regulations. Ability to be an effective supervisor and leader and maintain confidentiality and work collaboratively with a variety of teams, both internally and externally.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Experience with BANNER or similar information systems • SDSU Research Foundation experience
