The San Diego State University Research Foundation has an opportunity for a post-award research administrator to join our team of professionals in the Sponsored Research Administration department.
San Diego State University Research Foundation is a non-profit, auxiliary organization established to further the objectives of San Diego State University. San Diego State University is currently designated as a "research university" with high research activity by the Carnegie Foundation and soon expects to be Doctoral/Research-Extensive. SDSU faculty received $145 million in grants and contracts for research and program administration during fiscal year 2010-2011. Additionally, SDSU faculty members have received a total of more than $1.1 billion in external funding since 2000. The Research Foundation’s core function is to assist SDSU faculty and staff in developing and administering these externally funded projects. The Sponsored Research Administration Department is primarily responsible for the post award administration, compliance and fiscal management of these agreements.
The Sponsored Research Administrator serves as an important resource providing guidance and oversight on issues related to the fiscal, administrative and regulatory management of grants, contracts and sponsored programs from award receipt through closeout. This individual will be responsible for managing a complex and diverse workload that is comprised of grants and contracts awarded from federal, state and local government and private funding agencies, as well as donations and self support activities. The administrator must manage his/her workload with concern for service, audits and compliance. Core responsibilities include serving as a liaison regarding compliance, financial reporting and invoicing with funding agencies and other RF departments; working with faculty to submit requests for prior approvals to sponsor agencies; provide detailed financial guidance and cost projections to principal investigators; review and approval of expenditures and cost transfers, subrecipient monitoring, documentation and monitoring of cost sharing, and award closeout. This position requires a significant emphasis on customer service, financial monitoring and forecasting, and understanding and interpreting complex federal regulations and internal policies and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Business Administration, Accounting or related field; OR A minimum of 4 years of progressive responsibility in an institution of higher education, research institution or non-profit organization or related accounting experience.
Candidates may be hired as an SR Administrator I, II or III level contingent upon level of expertise and number of years of direct experience in the field of research administration.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities required
Ability to analyze and evaluate a variety of complex regulations, apply sound judgment, draw logical conclusions and determine solutions in a timely manner. Ability to communicate effectively and exercise independent judgment and discretion when working with faculty, staff, and funding agency personnel. Understanding of accounting principles and practices and experience managing budgets and forecasting and reporting expenditures. Strong planning and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines and develop solutions to complex problems. Experience using various computer applications and business systems with proficiency in word processing and spreadsheets. Experience working in a fast paced environment with a diverse client/customer base. Thorough knowledge of current computer and office automation equipment and software. Knowledge of governmental accounting principles, sponsor agency reporting requirements, audit policies and OMB circulars and Federal Acquisition Regulations
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Direct experience working in research administration in either a pre-award or post award capacity.
Experience with BANNER or similar information systems
