What is your institution's policy for receiving additional pay? How do you address conflict of interest issues? Do you usually increase an individual's base salary when external funding is received? Typically, additional compensation would not be permitted since 1)the work would be done during the faculty member's normally prescribed work schedule, and 2)the work is something that falls under the normal scope of work performed by the faculty member. On the sub-contract, it has hourly rate for each person involved in the project. We have to submit invoices quarterly for personnel reimbursements. However, PI thinks of these hours as extra workload and requests for the money to be added as a bonus on his salary. We are not sure if he could do this since he would have already been working these hours on campus anyway and receiving regular salary. Has anyone dealt with this? Thank you, Tong --- end of quote --- Tong, You are not mentioning which kind of appointment your faculty has. If your faculty member has a 9 month academic appointment, the summer research time compensation may indeed come in addition to the regular 9 month salary. Under a 12 month appointment, it would not be possible to increase the salary to support your faculty's research commitment.
