You'll note that the REU Supplement actually does not come with its own dates - it's simply a supplement to the active NSF grant. What's important is that the REU funds are used in ways consistent with the REU program announcement; REU supplements are usually budgeted as Participant Support and those funds require NSF prior approval before moving into regular project line items. We usually ask the PI to check with a program officer on decisions of this sort, even though we know that NSF doesn't want the funds returned. I would say that you could use the remaining funds to support the students research past the 12 weeks just as long as you remain within the project period/award period for the grant and there is no tremendous change in scope of service. At the end of the summer, there was a small amount of funding remaining. Does anyone know if it is okay to use the remaining funds to support the student's research work on the grant into the academic year or are we restricted to the 12 weeks stated in the original proposal? Thanks in advance for your advice.
