Dear Colleagues and Friends:
The George Washington University Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Tropical Medicine (GW-MITM) is pleased to invite you to “A Symposium on Global Health Solutions through Science and Technology,” to commemorate the department’s 10th anniversary.
The symposium will take place from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday November 10th, 2010 in the Jack Morton Auditorium.
We are honored to host as our distinguished keynote speaker Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health, followed by four brief lectures from key faculty from GW-MITM.
The agenda for this symposium is as follows:
3:00 – 3:15 p.m. Welcome and Introductions, Dr. Peter J. Hotez
3:15 – 4:00 p.m. Plenary Lecture: “Addressing Infectious Diseases of Global Health Importance: The Research Path,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, NIH-NIAID
4:00 – 4:40 p.m. Round Table (10 minutes each)
• Infection and immunity: advancing science to understand host-pathogen relationships, Dr. Imitiaz Khan
• Bridging cancer and infectious diseases: neglected tropical disease pathogens - liver flukes and schistosomes – and carcinogenesis, Dr. Paul Brindley
• Innovative approaches to identify new therapies against HIV-AIDS, Dr. Michael Bukrinsky
• Combating neglected infections of poverty: applying translational science for sustainable development of new vaccines, Dr. Maria Elena Bottazzi
4:40 – 5:00 p.m. Q&A Session
In August 2000, GW-MITM was founded as a new type of academic microbiology department. Unlike most medical school microbiology departments, we proposed to establish a vibrant tradition of basic and translational research, applied biotechnology, and educational programs for some of the world's most important infectious and parasitic diseases - diseases which both initiate and perpetuate poverty. Thanks to our many collaborators, we have much to celebrate with you!
GW-MITM’s 10th Anniversary Symposium is open to the public and does not have a registration fee, but we do ask that you pre-register as space for this event is limited.
Please register by going to http://mitm.eventbrite.com
Please contact Krista Osterthaler at 202.994.2186 or xxxxxx@gwumc.edu if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Peter J. Hotez, M.D., Ph.D.
